Mumbai on Monday was hit by a severe heatwave as the temperature touched 38.9 degrees Celsius

The Regional Met Centre (RMC) in Mumbai stated that the minimum temperature in the city on Monday morning was recorded at 21.3 degrees Celsius at the Santacruz observatory

The India Meteorological Department also confirmed that these readings were significantly above the seasonal average

Before the heatwave struck Mumbai in the afternoon, the minimum temperature during the early hours at the Colaba observatory was recorded at 24 degrees Celsius

The weather department has predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Monday and Tuesday

Weather bulletin issued on Monday afternoon, the weather department has issued a yellow alert, warning residents about the possibility of unusually high temperatures during the period

Apart from the Mumbai metropolitan region, similar alerts have been issued for several districts across Maharashtra

Similar alerts have also been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Akola and Amravati

Amid the concerning heatwaves across Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra, the IMD has also issued precautionary measures to avoid heatstroke

IMD has advised people to stay hydrated and drink sufficient water even if not feeling thirsty to avoid dehydration

Recognise the signs of heat stroke, heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating and seizures. If you feel faint or ill, see a doctor/hospital immediately
