Janmashtami, marks the birth of Lord Krishna and devotees celebrate it with traditional fervour, music, and the energetic Dahi Handi festivities

Govinda pathaks formed human pyramids on Saturday to reach and break pots (handis) filled with curd, symbolic of Krishna’s childhood pranks

While celebrations were largely joyful, authorities remained on high alert to ensure safety

Dahi Handi is a traditional event that takes place primarily on the second day of Janmashtami, known as Gokulashtami

Groups of young men and boys, referred to as Govindas, form human pyramids to reach and break the pot (handi)

The tradition of Dahi Handi stems from tales of Bal Krishna (young Krishna), who was famously fond of butter and would often raid the neighbourhood homes with his friends

Over the years, Dahi Handi has evolved into a grand event with political patronage, sponsorships, prize money, and massive public gatherings

Govinda Pathaks train for weeks to perfect their pyramid-building techniques

Some handis are placed at huge heights, testing the strength, coordination, and courage of the participants

Dahi Handi also serves as a platform for promoting community bonding, youth engagement, and cultural pride
