According to the Hindu calendar, the Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksh in the month of Bhadrapada begins on August 15 at 11:49 pm and ends on August 16 at 9:34 pm, meaning different sects observe Janmashtami on different days. PIC/ SATEJ SHINDE

On Friday, the Smarta Sampradaya, who worship the Panchdev, celebrate the festival based on Rohini Nakshatra. On Saturday, the Vaishnav Sampradaya, followers of Lord Vishnu, observe the festival according to Udaya Tithi, which is timed with sunrise

On this day, devotees fast, dress in traditional attire, and bathe before adorning Lord Krishna’s idols with new clothes and jewellery

They seek blessings for their families’ well-being while engaging in kirtans and chanting the Lord’s name

Many devotees decorate the deity, light incense sticks, and read sacred scriptures

In many states, Dahi Handi celebrations are held, where participants form human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot filled with butter and curd, suspended at a height
