Smog has enveloped large parts of Mumbai as air pollution levels worsened on Sunday. The air quality index (AQI) reached 132 citywide, placing the metropolis in the ‘unhealthy’ category. Other areas also reported elevated pollution levels, including Ghatkopar (144), Kandivali West (131), Colaba (107), Powai (132) and Deonar (140), indicating that pollution was widespread rather than confined to isolated pockets
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) advisory, ‘moderate’ AQI could cause breathing discomfort to citizens with lung disorders, asthma, and heart disease while ‘poor’ AQI is likely to create breathing discomfort to most people due to prolonged exposure
Meanwhile, on Sunday, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out site inspections on Sunday in K East Ward (Andheri) and H East Ward (Bandra East). The civic body said the purpose of the visit was to ensure effective implementation of the ongoing preventive measures to maintain healthy air quality in Mumbai
During the inspection, officials checked that water was being sprayed regularly to prevent dust, green nets were covering construction materials, materials were properly covered during transport, and roads were being cleaned mechanically. Authorities were instructed to take special care around schools and densely populated localities
