The work of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), which was expected to be completed by Tuesday, May 20, has been stopped and no new concrete road work can be undertaken without the approval of the additional municipal commissioner

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said that if parts of a road remain unfinished after concrete laying before the May 31 deadline, the remaining sections should be completed using mastic asphalt to ensure the stretch is fit for smooth movement of vehicles

The road cement and concretisation work is being carried out in the entire jurisdiction of BMC to avoid potholes this monsoon season

The civic body said it has set deadlines for each road project and it is mandatory that engineers remain present on site during the construction work

The Mumbai civic officials are also conducting surprise inspections during the ongoing works to ensure quality work is being done across the city as part of the project

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had stated that the road works must be of high quality and warned that strict action would be taken against any contractor or officer if substandard work is found

Along with the road works, the BMC has also directed the officials to ensure that the drains are cleaned and the construction debris are cleared from the work sites ahead of monsoon

To ensure high standards, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay has been appointed as an independent quality-checking agency
