Tension was reported in Mumbai's Mahim area on Tuesday after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha members and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers came face-to-face over a controversy involving MNS leader Amit Thackeray.

The BJP had objected to a video showing Thackeray during a visit to a college in Pune on Monday, asking MNS workers to remove a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a wall. The video surfaced on social media on Monday and subsequently went viral. BJP workers alleged that Thackeray's action was disrespecting the Prime Minister.

On Tuesday afternoon, the BJP Yuva Morcha held a protest in Mahim, condemning Thackeray's video. An MNS worker told mid-day.com that MNS workers in large numbers had gathered outside the MNS office after learning about the BJP Yuva Morcha's planned protest, as they were expecting the protesters to arrive at Shivaji Park.

BJP-MNS face-off in Mahim leads to police intervention

According to the MNS worker, when the BJP members did not turn up at Shivaji Park, MNS workers later proceeded to Mahim, where the BJP Yuva Morcha members were protesting, leading to a face-off, with workers from both sides raising slogans and tensions rising at the spot.

To prevent a law-and-order situation, police officials intervened and detained some workers from both parties.

Reacting to the incident, MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande said, "A face-off took place between our party workers and BJP workers after they tried to unnecessarily divert the issue. Instead of focusing on the photograph of PM Modi, the BJP should address the issues that are actually affecting students and work towards resolving them."
