Survivors of Monday's Maoist assault in Dantewada recount horror they witnessed

A day after Maoists unleashed terror at Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, killing more than 30 people, MiD DAY managed to speak to the survivors of the massacre. Here is an excerpt:

Panda Bhima, a resident of Binjra village, which is a few kilometres away from the blast site said, "I was standing in the bus, which was packed with more than 60 passengers. Every time I think of what happened, I get scared. But what I can't forget is the bodies all around me."

Ganga Raju (24), a resident of Sukma said, "The bus was on the way to Sukma to Dantewada. The entire front row, which had the police and the paramilitary personnel, was the worst hit by the blast."

"I got injuries in my head, leg and hands. I still have no information about my two other friends," added Raju.
Dr K R Gautam, Block Medical office, Dantewada district hospital, said, "Of the 38 cases that came to us, four were brought dead. Of the remaining, 17 critically injured were shifted to the district hospital of Jagdalpur, where another three died."

"Four bodies are still unidentified, and it is not clear whether they are civilians or policemen, because they are badly mangled. One of our medical staff Shanti Kashyap, also died in the blast," added Gautam.
