Exactly a year after Nayna Pujari was kidnapped and murdered, husband talks to MiD DAY about fight for justice
October 8. That was the day last year when Nayna Pujari (29) was found murdered after her kidnap. Exactly a year has passed since then, but her case is still pending in court with its conclusion nowhere in sight.
As today is also the day of sentencing in the five-year-old rape and murder case of BPO employee Prathibha Murthy in Bangalore, MiD DAY spoke to Nayna's husband Abhijeet Pujari about his fight for justice.
"So far the case has been proceeding in a satisfying manner, particularly after the appointment of special public prosecutor Advocate Harshad Nimbalkar," said Pujari. "When one of the accused approached the court with a request to turn approver, it was a tough moment for me because the said accused was also involved in the gruesome act. But then, there were no eyewitnesses in the case, and this step was much needed so that all
the accused are punished."
Pujari said that he has felt the same trauma and pain that Pratibha's mother Gowramma went through while fighting for justice.
"I strongly feel that the people responsible for Nayna's gruesome murder should get the full quantum of punishment that they deserve," he said.
Shiv Sena spokesperson and women rights activist Neelam Gorhe, who was involved in the fight for justice for three victims of gang rape in the IT sector, said the "The conviction in the Bangalore case is enough to show that legal follow-up in gang rape cases from the IT sector in Mahrashtra is very slow," she said. "Political leaders announce that the case is being transferred to fast track courts, but later no one follows it up. And even after three cases, we have to say that when it comes to ensuring the safety and security of women employees, employers in the IT sector are ungrateful towards employees."
