Opposition leaders across the country on Monday condemned the car explosion near Delhi's Red Fort, which killed at least eight people and injured 24 others, and urged the government to ensure a swift and transparent investigation into the incident.
A high-intensity explosion ripped through a car parked near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, gutting several vehicles and shattering nearby window panes. The blast, heard across adjoining buildings in the congested area, prompted police to issue a high alert in the national capital. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot as the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) cordoned off the area.
Incident âdeeply distressing', says Congress
The Congress termed the incident "deeply distressing" and called for a thorough and speedy probe.
"The news of a car explosion near Red Fort Metro Station is deeply distressing. Early reports indicate that several lives have been lost. In this hour of grief, we stand with the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. The government must ensure a thorough and speedy investigation into the incident," said Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera in a post on X.
Kejriwal terms blast "extremely alarming"
Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal termed the explosion "extremely alarming" and sought an immediate and thorough investigation.
"The news of the explosion near the Red Fort is extremely alarming. It is reported that some people have also lost their lives in it, which is extremely tragic," Kejriwal wrote on X.
"The police and government should immediately investigate how this explosion occurred and whether there is any larger conspiracy behind it. Negligence regarding Delhi's security cannot be tolerated."
AAP leader Manish Sisodia also urged people to remain calm and united.
"The news of the explosion in Delhi is extremely concerning. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. In such times, maintaining peace and restraint is our greatest strength - terrorism and fear can only be countered through our unity," he wrote.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee expresses shock
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep shock over the blast.
"Deeply shocked to hear about the tragic blast in New Delhi. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones and I pray for strength and a swift recovery for all those injured," she said in a post on X.
Naveen Patnaik mourns blast victims
Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, mourned the victims.
"Deeply saddened to learn about the loss of so many precious lives in the explosion near #RedFort. My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families who lost their near and dear ones. Prayers for the swift recovery of those who have sustained injuries," Patnaik said in a post on X.
