Gandhinagar: At least 45 people died due to heavy rains and flood like situation which prevails in Saurashtra and south Gujarat since the last 24 hours.

Gujarat's Amreli district is the worst affected as 36 people died in the flood fury on Wednesday.

According to reports, 13 people died when two houses collapsed in Nani Vabhaniya village near Bagasara town of Amreli district, three died in Bhavnagar district, two died in Gaondal in Rajkot district and three lost their lives in Surat district due to the floods.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Air force (IAF) have been pressed into the service for rescue and relief works in Amreli district. Additional companies of State Reserve Police (SRP) force have been sent in all flood affected areas.

Over 100 people have been airlifted in Amreli district while one thousand people have been evacuated in Surat due to flood and heavy rain fall.

Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, who reviewed the flood situation at a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar yesterday, urged the people not to panic and co-operate with the administration in its rescue and relief efforts.

'Held meeting with Gujarat govt officials, IAF & IMD along with local administration of all the districts affected due to heavy rains,' Patel tweeted yesterday.

'Have directed officials to constantly monitor situation in the affected villages & accord utmost priority to rescue stranded individuals,' she added.

The Chief Minister also said that several SRP and NDRF teams along with IAF helicopter have begun rescue operations in affected areas and more will join as per the requirement.

'Also reviewed availability of rescue equipments, stock of food grains & medical supplies to make sure that they reach every needy person,' she said in a series of tweets.
