The Akshardham temple complex in east Delhi may soon become the most fire-safe place in the city. The authorities there have decided to upgrade the fire-fighting system of the temple.

Safe: The Akshardham temple

As reported by MiD DAY on July 9, a fire had broken out in the main temple last month, damaging six statues, including Lord Swaminarayan's 10-feet-high idol. The temple has been closed till Diwali for restoration.

"We are fortunate no lives were lost in the fire. We are doing a fresh safety audit of the temple. Old gadgets will be replaced with world-class modern equipment. Temperature control and fire alarm systems will be installed in the complex so that any problem gets noticed immediately,' said Dr Janak Dave, the PRO of Akshardham temple.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Fire Department said the temple has 'impressive' safety and security mechanism and also the mandatory fire safety clearance. "It was an accident that can occur anywhere. Otherwise, they have got the best systems," said Deputy Chief Fire Officer (east and south zone), Santokh Singh.
