A man who had obtained a job in China by falsely claiming to be a graduate landed in jail when he tried to obtain a fake marksheet from the University of Pune (UoP) using fraudulent means.
Rajesh Savlani, who is a former student of Wadia College, had failed his degree exams in 1997.
He then lied about his marks and degree and managed to get a job in China. Years later Savlani decided he wanted to get a 'degree' in case his company did a background check with UoP.
He got references of a few people in the exam department. He bribed them and asked them to change his marks in the subject he had failed in. "He had scored only three marks in that subject and wanted it to be changed to 13," a source said.
After paying the amount, Savlani was told his marks would be changed. He was also told to apply for a duplicate marksheet a few weeks after his computerised data was changed. He applied for a fresh marksheet on November 16.
"When he applied for the marksheet, a clerk realised that Savlani had not passed the subject. The marksheets cannot be tampered with and can be identified with a laser technology. It was realised that some attempt was made to change marks," the source said.
Shivaji Ahire, controller of Examinations Department, confirmed the fraud and said an inquiry was on.
"We are trying to get all the details and will be able to tell you better in a few days. He changed the marks with his own hands on the marksheet and presented it to us. But we have scanned all marksheets and the laser technology helped us recognise the fraud. There are allegations on our staffers which we are investigating," he said.
