This is the fourth time Shobha Karandlaje has performed a Sankalpa Vrata -- the last three times were met with varying degrees of successIt is that time of the year again. Power Minister Shobha Karandlaje is fasting for nine days as part a ritual to save Yeddyurappa. This is not the first time either. Shobha, regarded as a significant other to the Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, is doing her bit to save his position and has embarked on Sankalpa Vrata, a ritual with continuous worshipping of the favourite god and fasting.

"She started the vrata on mahalaya amavasya, and will continue it for nine days until navratri ends," said a source close to Shobha. "She is praying to durga during the vrata." As a rule, cooked food including rice is forbidden, and Shobha is on fruits and a mix of beaten rice (avalakki) and jaggery. "She takes that for breakfast, while lunch and dinner is fruits and juice," said the source.
Tried and testedIt seems like for Shobha, the vrata is a time-tested method to save Yeddyurappa's CM position, as it is the fourth time she is resorting to it, while previous three were successful.
The first time she performed it when former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy went back on his words to handover the power as the chief minister Yeddyurappa, after completion of his 20 months regime, in 2007. That was when Shobha took Yeddyurappa on a pilgrimage to Vaishnodevi, while performing sankalpa vrata. This was followed by Yeddyurappa becoming CM for the first time and then losing power after seven days.
The second time, in 2008, she did the vrata when the state went for assembly polls, in 2008 and BJP managed to come to power with Yeddyurappa becoming CM.
Vrata, the saviour!The third time when the vrata helped her was when the dissidence raised the banner of revolt against Yeddyurappa led by Reddys, last year, when he managed to retain power, though he sacrificed Shobha, who had to resign.
According to BS Gangadhar, an official vaastu consultant for the BJP, sankalpa is to determine to achieve something that appears to be impossible.
"If it's proving difficult for you to build a house in a given situation, and if you perform sankalpa vrata, the task will become achievable," said Gangadhar. "Maybe her belief is that she can achieve survival of the government through the vrata. "Gangadhar is close to Shobha and she used to take his advice in issues like vaastu and astrology.
After former minister Krishnaiah Setty, a loyalist to Yeddyurappa, performed a special pooja at Tirupati, Shobha received him at Jakkur airport on his return yesterday.
'It's not a crime'"There is nothing wrong in believing in God when men are not trustworthy," said Shobha. "If I am doing a vrata it is not a crime unlike JD(S) leaders, who are into criminal methods to topple a democratically elected government," she added.
