Family demands arrest; police cover increases after mob collects

A 28-year-old pregnant woman allegedly died of medical negligence after a doctor administered a wrong injection to her in Pimpri on Monday late night.

The woman was declared dead after she was brought to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) hospital after which the situation got tense, as her relatives gathered in large numbers and demanded the arrest of the concerned doctor.

Rekha Kamlesh Bansode (28), a resident of Milind Nagar in Pimpri, allegedly died at Kaushal Hospital in Pimpri gaon.

Dr Surendra Chugh had allegedly given her an injection to control her fever, however after the drug was administered Rekha fell unconscious and later died.

u00a0Alka Bansode, cousin of the deceased said, "Rekha was one month pregnant and was undergoing treatment at Kaushal Hospital. She was suffering from fever for a couple of days, after which she went to Dr Chugh, who runs a maternity hospital. On Monday night Dr Chugh administered her an injection, which has led to her death."

u00a0"When Rekha stopped responding, the doctor told us to take Rekha to YCM Hospital. He refused to take any responsibility of the medical negligence, which has caused her death," Alka alleged. "We have given a written complaint to Pimpri Police station against the doctor and we are demanding his arrest," she added.

u00a0Dr Deepak Pakhale, Chief Medical Officer at YCM said, "Rekha was declared dead on arrival around 11.15 pm. Her body has been sent for the post-mortem examination, after which the exact reason behind her death would be ascertained."

u00a0Dr Chugh was not available for comments. Nurses at Kaushal Hospital did not respond to several attempts even made by the local police to enquire about the incident.

Meanwhile, police protection was provided at Kaushal Hospital after relatives of Rekha started gathering at both the hospital premises.

u00a0Police Inspector TD Gaud from Pimpri police station and his staff members were deployed at YCM to avoid any untoward incident. "Action will be taken against the guilty after the postmortem report arrives," said investigating officer P B Gawde.
