With a 40-minute wait on a Sunday afternoon, the feeding at Pangat, the new "west-side" branch of a historic Konkani restaurant, feels almost hysterical.

Say "machchi" on this deserted road leading up to the picnicky Gorai beach, and it brings out the inner child in the most hardened manoos.

Throngs of Maharashtrian families on their weekly cooking break, with screaming children in tow, and students returning from a drab coaching class, make up the majority.

They obviously don't go by first impressions. The monster-sized digital poster that greets you depicts what a leftover fish thali looks like in all its half-gnawed glory. Talk about remains of the day!

Too bad though, because the fare that arrives on the square tables is fairly delicious. Pangat has built a veritable reputation for dishing out authentic Konkani and Malwani Manchurian in Lower Parel and Dahisar.

Think Kothimbir Wadi and Fry Mandeli. The quick service and mass-produced taste stay true to the eatery's name, which refers to 'dining together in a row'.

The fairly new addition in Borivali has already caught the neighbourhood's feasting fancy.

So, we avoided the Sunday rush for a laidback Monday noon meal with Kishoreda on the stereo and quietude for company.

Subdued artworks hang on the pale orange walls and happy fish fly are embossed on the sliding glass doors.

Fish Thali


The ones that arrive in our Fish Thali (Rs 130) weren't as lucky. It comprisd of Fried Mackerel and Surmai Curry with Chapatis, rice, tangy curry and a watered down Sol Kadhi.

Chicken Thali (Rs 130) had chicken cooked so authentically Konkani, we were back on the coast. Butter Garlic Prawn (Rs 125) was needlessly battered and more salty than buttery.

A host of Malwani Chinese dishes ply the menu, if you are not in the mood for traditional grub. Kharvas (Rs 40) sweetens the experience.

Prepared from cow's milk soon after it has given birth to a calf, it's a nutritious dessert you don't want to miss.
