Koriya (Chhattisgarh): Barely a week after it was reported that huge stocks of onions were rotting in Bhopal, it has now been learnt that the product is being sold at Rs 2 to Rs 4 in Chhattisgarh. The idea, according to local farmers and traders in Bhopal, is to get rid of the surplus stocks before the onions perish in godowns.

There has been bumper harvest of onions this year in Madhya Pradesh due to adequate rainfall. After channeling a major chunk of the produce in local markets, traders started selling onions in neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

Incidentally, the cost of a kilo of onion in New Delhi ranges between Rs 60 to Rs 80. But in Chhattisgarh, an entire sack of the produce is being sold for a price between Rs 100 and Rs 250. Not surprisingly, people are flocking to the markets to stock up.
