They got away with a small fortune, but only for about four hours. This case of dacoity was held in Maurya Enclave near Pitampura on April 3. Four people have been arrested; police have recovered Rs 7.26 lakh in cash, about 250 gm of gold jewellery, and some silver jewellery and foreign currency.

On Tuesday, Veena Manchanda (48), resident of Maurya Enclave was alone in her house with her servant named Sanjay (19). Sanjay had been hired only about a week ago through a person named Pradeep, who used to visit the house and had also provided servants earlier.

Sanjay along with Pradeep and three other accused - Ranjeet (22), Suraj (19), Umesh (19) and a juvenile (name withheld) entered Veena's room and threatened her to keep quite and not to raise an alarm and then tied her up with a piece of cloth. They forcibly took the keys from her and took out all the cash and jewellery lying in the almirahs of the house. During this period Umesh was holding Veena at knifepoint. After committing the dacoity they damaged the landline phone to stop the victim from contacting anyone.

"During search operations we apprehended Sanjay and Umesh from Paharganj area and recovered robbed cash, jewellery and other items from their possession. After sustained interrogation they gave the information of the other three accomplices. Ranjeet, Suraj and the juvenile were arrested from Nangloi area and stolen items were also recovered. The sixth accused Pradeep Yadav fled from Nangloi and could not be apprehended. Efforts are on to arrest him," said Meenu Choudhary, DCP North-West.

Crying wolf
A man, who allegedly registered a false case of car robbery to recoup a gambling loss, was arrested here last Friday. The person has been identified as Puneet Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said. Gupta, who owns a stamping factory in Bawana, had on March 28 approached police claiming that three youths robbed his car at gunpoint. He claimed they also forced him to sit inside the car and also robbed Rs. 8,000. During investigations, police received an input that the complainant had lodged a false report regarding the robbery, after selling it to recoup his loss and debts occurred in gambling.
