A one-storey building crumbled to bits and pieces yesterday morning after a gas leak was ignited

A family now finds itself homeless, after a gas leak lead to a minor explosion in Cox Town, less than a month after moving into their new home.

The one storey building collapsed at 7 am yesterday morning before the fire department's arrival.

The explosion left one dead. Pilamma (65), a neighbour was sitting out when the wall collapsed, crushing her to death.

B Ravi (38), Pilamma's son, said, "My mother was just sitting out like she always does when the wall collapsed." He added, "She was all my brothers and sisters had."u00a0 Rekha S (22), a housewife, gave birth to her son less than a fortnight ago lost everything to the explosion. She said, "The gas stove burst and now I have lost everything. All our furniture and clothes are gone even my jewelry was lost too."

She added, "I had a baby recently and now we are on the streets. My husband is a coolie. I don't know what we'll do."u00a0

A senior official from the fire department, said, "The department got the call at 7 am and we were there in 15 minutes. There was a gas leak in the building that no one seems to have noticed. Something set off an explosion, causing the building to collapse."

He added, "We managed to help everyone and only one person was killed. No one else seriously injured."
