The Crime Branch Unit I of the city police nabbed a man accused of raping and murdering a woman in Gujarat in March.

Acting on a tip-off, police officials arrested the suspect from Mominpura on Sunday.

He was on the run since March after allegedly raping and murdering Hemlata Ajaybhai Gupta (28) of Vapi, Gujarat. The suspect was identified as Tahil alias Shamuddin alias Ehsamuddin Amirulla Khan (28) who originally hails from Baliya district, Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Khan, a native of Bihar, was working at 'Interior Point Furniture' shop in Vapi for the past 10 years. On March 29, he went to Hemlata's house for furniture polishing where he allegedly raped and strangulated her to death and fled with Rs 10,000 cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 50,000, kept in a cupboard. A complaint in this regard was lodged by Ajaybhai Gupta (30) at Vapi police station.

The suspect stayed in Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai and later came to the city.

He was working at a furniture shop in Mominpura for the last one-and-half months and used the name of Shakil Shaikh. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by inspector Ram Pathare nabbed Khan at Mominpura and was handed over to the Gujarat police for further investigation. The other members of the team that nabbed Khan include Havaldar Yogesh Jagtap, Santosh Kshirsagar, Sunil Pawar, Chandrakant Phadtare, Narendra Parkhi, Sambhaji Bhagat and Suresh Bhosale.
