A study by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) had estimated in 2007 that the Delhi Metro would save emission of 27.6 thousand tonnes of green house gases. And the money saved will be Rs 41.04 crore.
The Delhi Metro's ridership in 2007 was five lakh per day and has now gone up to 8.5 lakh.
"The environmental and social benefits gained by the city because of the mass transport system will help recover the full cost of Delhi Metro's Phase-I two years earlier than anticipated by the old CRRI study. The cost was to be recovered in 2013," said Delhi Metro Spokesperson Anuj Dayal.
Delhi Metro's first phase of 65 km was completed at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore.
Two-wheeler shift
The CRRI study also found that an increased number of two-wheeler users are shifting to the Metro. The number of two-wheeler users who had the option of shifting to the Metro has gone up to 66 per cent this year from 32.81 per cent in 2007, the study said.However, the number of car owners who had the option of shifting to the Metro has increased only by ten per cent."Among all Metro users, 23.27 per cent said traffic jams were the main reason for their shift of preference; 5.14 per cent said they took to the Metro to avoid parking hassles; 16.51 per cent said they saved time with the train ride; 8.38 per cent found it safer and 15.97 per cent said the journey was more comfortable," said the CRRI study.
