Xavier Roig, the man behind the mind-boggling visual effects in Hollywood flicks like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Da Vinci Code and Hellboy 2 was in the city for a symposium on animation and visual effects. MiD DAY caught up with the graphic wiz for a brief chat.

How was the experience of working on Harry Potter and Hellboy 2?
I worked on Harry Potter for over a year, with a team of 25 people, especially on the sequence on the Hall of Prophecies that involved around 180 shots. As for Hellboy 2, it took another year with a team of 10 people, and there were different themes there.

How would you rate your work in the two movies?
For Hellboy 2, I'd give 10/10. But for Harry Potter, I'd give 7/10. Though it's a big franchisee, Warner Bros, where it was formal, tedious and not much leverage for creative freedom. But in Hellboy, we could give more creative inputs.

How was the experience of working on Dhoom?
It was cool. I like Bollywood movies the guns, fast cars. It was really fun and I'd rate my work here as 8/10.

Your take on the animation scene in India.
It's coming up well, but there is still a long way to go. The artists are evolving and there's a lot of talent. But if Indian companies are serious about competing with internationally acclaimed businesses, a lot of money and experience will have to be put in.

What's the best animation that you have seen in a movie?
I was motivated by Terminator 2. But what impressed me the most were the Matrix trilogy The Matrix, Matrix Revolutions and Matrix Reloaded.

And the worst?
It was in a movie called The Living Forest that I saw in Spain some 10 years ago. It was so bad that I could not watch it for more than five minutes.

Your message for aspiring animators in Pune?
You have to fight for your space. There are opportunities for everyone, but you will only go far if you don't fight for it.
