Thammaiah was on his way to his brother's farm house in Kenchenahalli from office when the incident occurred. The gang first threw stones on the SUV in which he was traveling. The driver then immediately stopped the vehicle. Even before Thammaiah could realise what was happening around, he was dragged out of his car and assaulted with lethal weapons by the gang. However, the driver was left unharmed.

Thammaiah who sustained severe multiple injuries on his head and face was rushed to a private nursing home in Yelahanka. He was later shifted to M S Ramaiah Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries. Thammaiah was supposed to leave for Mysore yesterday evening but changed his plans last minute as he had a meeting on Tuesday. Thammaiah's wife Bhavani resides in Mysore while he and his daughter Indu, who's doing her post graduation in speech and hearing, stay at the KPTCL quarters.

M R Pujar, additional commissoiner of police (law and order), who visited the hospital, said that a case has been registered and investigations were on. "We've got a vital clue which we would not like to disclose at this point.

The culprits will soon be tracked down," Pujar said.

Property dispute?

Basavaraj Malagatti, DCP, North East Division, said, "Thammaiah and his brothersu00a0 owned around four acres of land in a prime location in Yelahanka. We suspect property row led to the murder."

However, Thammaiah's relatives said they had no idea of the motive behind the incident or the persons involved in it.

Thammaiah, who was additional superintendent of police in Hassan district, retired two years ago. He was appointed on contract basis by KPTCL in its vigilance division, recently.
