A separatist march against Indian rule was prevented by the authorities who deployed police and paramilitary troops in Jammu and Kashmir

A separatist march against Indian rule was prevented by the authorities who deployed police and paramilitary troops in Jammu and Kashmir. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house arrest after Geelani called upon residents of Kashmir to march for a rally.

The region has been reeling under curfews since June 11 when a teenage student in Srinagar died from a teargas shell attack by the police. So far, 64 protesters have been killed, mostly by security forces.

The authorities used barbed wire barriers and erected iron gates to seal off the area around the ground, which is close to a UN office monitoring ceasefire violations along the Line of Control dividing India and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

Over the past 11 weeks, the region has seen daily anti-India protests often defying curfews. Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had urged "non-lethal, yet focused measures" to restore order in the region.
