Residents of NIBM road find it difficult to get home as main chowks leading to the area get flooded and become off-limits for pedestrians and motorists
For residents of NIBM road, making provisions for additional travel expenses during the rainy season is a norm.
This happens because all the major chowks on this busy road get water-logged when it rains and commuters then have to travel an extra four to five kilometres to get home.
Motorists end up spending more on petrol, as they have to take longer routes.
Besides, housing about 60,000 people, NIBM road serves as a major access route to Kondhwa, Undri and Mohammadwadi.
Shopkeepers here also complain that they lose business because this road becomes inaccessible to customers.
To assess the situation, additional city engineer (road) Vivek Kharwadkar and his team of officers along with PMC corporator Tanaji Lonkar accompanied MiD Day to inspect this road and identified three spots that needed urgent attention.
Survey results and proposed solutions
NIBM Chowk near Jyoti Hotel
Problem: This main chowk at NIBM road near Jyoti hotel is inundated each time it rains. Pedestrians are forced to wade through knee-deep waters, while bikes and cars often get stuck. After assessing the situation, it was found that the road is at the end of a slope and so the running rainwater would collect there. This chowk does not have a storm water drainage that would allow water to drain off quickly.
PMC's promise: The road needed a storm water drainage system and tenders would be invited for the same. Work on the drainage would commence within 20 days. However, as an interim arrangement rainwater would be diverted to sewer drainage pipes.
Access road to Mohammadwadi, Undri
Problem: During the rains, the water level rises to at least three to four feet here, making it impossible for pedestrians and motorists to use this road. While there are just smatterings of residential buildings on this road, it serves as a major access route to densely populated areas such as Undri and Mohammadwadi. PMC's promise: Officials were clueless about a permanent solution for this problem. They said they had been demanding funds to repair the road and install storm water drainage for almost three years. But no funds had been released. They could only offer a temporary solution, which was to pump out the water manually every time it rained.

Problem: This chowk, connecting four major roads, is at the lowest point of a slope. Owing to this disadvantage and also absence of storm water drainage this junction is often submerged on a rainy day. PMC's promise: Storm water drainage about 200m long would be constructed. As a temporary arrangement, the corporator has promised to send in workers to pump out the water that collects here.u00a0
