A 32-year-old groom landed in jail instead of the wedding hall after his bride registered an FIR against him and his family who asked for dowry on the day of their wedding.

Feroz Ansari, who worked for a courier company, was to wed Shajiya Khan on May 22. On May 21, Shajiya's elder sister was to get married and the family had gone to Malad. However, Shajiya stayed back with a relative as her three-year-old daughter who was unwell.

At around 10 pm, they took the child to the doctor. On their way back, Feroz's sister saw Shajiya and told her parents that she may have spotted Shajiya with a man late at night.

They, in turn, called Shajiya's father who hailed a cab and came to Dharavi at 2 am with his youngest daughter Shehnaz to meet the Ansari family. Feroz's parents accused Shajiya of meeting a man, and threatened to end the relationship.

When Shajiya's father tried to explain that they had gone to the doctor as the child was unwell, Ansari's father asked him to register the house in Bhiwandi - which Shajiya owned - in Feroz's name and also demanded jewellery to keep the wedding plans on.

"At 4.30 am on May 22, I got to know that Feroz's family had demanded dowry. I told my sister Shehnaz that I didn't want to marry into a family which had accused me of having an affair, just to demand dowry.

My family tried to pacify me, but I was firm in my decision. To teach the family a lesson, I registered an FIR against Feroze and his family at Dharavi police station in the morning," said Shajiya."

Police Inspector Lalasaheb Shete from Dharavi police station said, "An FIR was registered on Friday morning against Feroze, his parents and six sisters. We arrested Feroze and his father Sajudeen Ansari on Saturday. They were presented at Bandra Magistrate court where they were remanded to judicial custody. The investigations are underway."

A case has been registered under Section 420 (cheating), 500 (defamation) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC.
