Sassoon hospital will soon have a police chowky on its premises. Dedicated to the security of hospital staff and patients, the chowky will be the first in a hospital in the state.

Last month, the police sent a letter to the hospital authorities asking them to identify space for the police chowky.

In the past two days, there have been two attacks on doctors by patients' relatives at Sassoon.

u00a0"I got a letter from commissioner's office saying they wanted a chowky here," said Dr Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon. "Our doctors will have added protection in form of constables with rifles. Patients' relatives don't get scared by our private security men and have hit them too."

Identifying space
He added that the process of identifying suitable space on the campus was on.
"A lot of space is under construction so it is taking time as they need a bigger space," said Jamkar.
Senior PI Suhas Nadgouda of the Bund Garden police station, under the jurisdiction of which the hospital falls, said, "The hospital gets a lot of medico-legal cases on a daily basis. It handles prisoners from Yerawada jail and occasionally there are attacks on doctors. It is necessary to start a chowky there."
