Sangli police officials suspect someone else may have shot 33-year-old Chandrakant Nalawade, a farmer from Vasagade village in Sangli district, who died on Monday. They also rubbished the allegations, levelled by Nalawade's family members, that police had killed him.

"There is a possibility that Nalawade was killed in the firing by some people from a Sumo car. The ballistic report will confirm whether he was killed by a police bullet or someone else's bullet," Superintendent of Police of Sangli Dilip Sawant said.

Nalawade was killed when he was struck by five bullets near Vasagade village, after police opened fire to control the angry mob on Monday afternoon.
Sawant said the Nalawades were initially not ready to claim Chandrakant's body, but they finally relented yesterday.

"We handed over the body to his family. The situation is somewhat under control in the district, as no major untoward incident has been reported since morning," Sawant said yesterday. "We have a good rapport with the locals and the farmers, and convinced them not to take the path of violence, to which they agreed."

Sawant said Monday's protest left around 16 constables and two police inspectors injured. Besides, several police and government vehicles were vandalised and torched by the angry mob at several locations in Sangli. "We appeal to the people not to indulge in street violence and refrain from damaging public property," he said.

Back on track
"On Monday, several routes were disrupted due to violence on the roads and two MSRTC buses were torched. Routes towards Pune and Kolhapur were badly hit. Except for a few routes, where situation is still tense, most of the routes have attained normalcy," Divisional Controller of Sangli MSRTC Depot Rahul Toro said yesterday.u00a0
