Health department officials turned to the latest Kannada flicks in a desperate attempt to get panicky parents to polio booths on Sunday.

Many parents stayed away from the pulse polio immunization programme after media reports sparked rumours of children falling ill due to polio drops last month.

So, what did the health department do? Combined lyrics of the pulse polio campaign with music from Milana, Mungaru Male, Taj Mahal etc, blared them over loudspeakers fitted in autos and whoa!

By the end of the day, officials said, the turnout had improved.

"It's another creative method to reach people," said Dr Sudarshan, MOH (Medical official of Health), BBMP.

Though Kannada songs were played in the past, this time all the old songs were replaced with the latest hits, said Dr Venugopal, another health official.

The idea wasn't an instant hit, however, with the turnout being quite low in the first half of the day. BBMP officials then decided to go for a door-to-door method. "We anticipated a turnout of more than 90 per cent. But it was less than that."

"We will carryout the campaign for the next three days too," added Sudarshan. "We will visit houses in the city and do what we did here in the booths."
