The Kanthraj family would have burnt to death had his neighbours not intervened.

S Kanthraj (39), a resident of Boweelane 'A' street was in an inebriated state last night when he had a quarrel with his wife Sumitra, after which he abused her and beat up his two kids Shilpa (12) and Akash (10).

He locked them in the bedroom, poured kerosene and set himself ablaze.

Kanthraj was taken by cops to Victoria Hospital.

Neighbours were caught unawares when he ran out of the house screaming; his body on fire. They, however, got into action soon and saved him.

Prasad, who saved Kanthraj's life said, "I saw him running out of the house; he was on fire. At first I was shocked, but got into action quickly and poured water on him."

Other neighbours ran out of their houses when they heard Sumitra and her kids' scream. "The clothes in the house had caught fire and it was spreading. We saved the family in the nick of time," added another neighbour.
