The weather office on Sunday forecast chances of light rain and snowfall in the next 24 hours in the Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures remained below the freezing point in the valley and the Ladakh region on Sunday. "We are expecting light rain and snow in the Valley during the next 24 hours. Weather would remain generally cloudy in the Jammu region during this period," the office said.
The rain and snow could bring an end to the extended dry spell in the valley and bring respite to the locals who are facing drinking water shortages as rivers, lakes, springs and streams have hit the bottom. Srinagar city recorded minus 1.8 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature on Sunday while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 4.4 and minus 5 degrees Celsius. Kargil town at minus 15.2 degrees Celsius was the coldest in state followed by Leh town at minus 10.2 degrees Celsius. Jammu city recorded 9.5, Katra 7.7 while Batote, Bannihal, Bhaderwah and Udhampur recorded 2.5, minus 0.9, 0.4 and 2.9 degrees Celsius as their minimum temperatures.
