A 31-year-old SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself inside the premises of Bikaner House in New Delhi area on Thursday Night. According to the police, he shot himself with his own rifle when he was on duty.

The deceased have been identified as Rajender Puri (31), is from Nainital in Uttarakhand. He was with the SSB since 1999 and was part of the F Company of SSB.

"The incident took place at around 10 pm on Thursday and he was posted at Bikaner House and was on duty at the time. No suicide note was found from his procession.

He took this extreme step because he was mentally disturbed for the last five to six months. His body was sent for post-mortem and further investigation is in process," said a senior police official.

Security lapse
"It was major security lapse if the constable was mentally unfit to carry out his duty as he was deputed at an important place, which is frequented by a lot of tourists and visitors," an official said under the condition of anonymity.

According to sources, he was mentally disturbed and was in huge mental pressure. He had also undergone a mental treatment in VIMHANS Hospital in the month of December 2010 and discharged in January 2011.

"The constable was emotionally disturbed and had also undergone medical treatment earlier this year but SSB officials insisted that the deceased had rejoined duty after being declared fit for duty by the doctors.

A letter was recovered from his belongings in which it was mentioned that the deceased was not feeling very happy with what was going on in his life." Sources said.

"Despite knowing all this facts about Rajender, that he was mentally disturbed, he was posted in Bikaner House with the SLR (Self Loaded Rifle), which is a very sensitive weapon," sources said.

When MiD DAY tried to speak with SSB officials about this incident, they were unavailable for comment.

Tragic end to love story
Failed in love, a 22-year-old constable who worked with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) allegedly shot dead his 22-year-old fellow lady constable who was posted along with him at Yamuna Bank Metro station in east Delhi before killing himself on Friday morning.

According to the police, the male constable was identified as M Pillai and the woman constable as NVS Teja. Pillai belonged to Kerala and Teja was from Andhra Pradesh. Both were recruited to the force in 2009.

"The incident was reported at around 7 am when CISF constable M Pillai allegedly shot six rounds from his AK47 into the woman constable Teja before shooting himself.u00a0

Teja died on the spot while Pillai was then immediately rushed to the Lal Bhadur Shastri Hospital in east Delhi area where both were declared brought dead by doctors.

It appears that they were in a relationship and there was some personal dispute. We are investigating the matter," said a senior police official.
