Sexagenarian tries to protect her two-year-old grandson, both die

Sixty-one-year-old Surender Kaur and her grandson died of suffocation when a fire broke out at their Karol

Bagh home on Tuesday afternoon. The elderly woman had tried valiantly to save the young boy, Arman, but her efforts went in vain.


According to the police, as soon as the fire broke out, the woman in a bid to save the life of her grandson grabbed the baby and locked herself inside the bathroom. Unfortunately, her attempt was unsuccessful and the two died inside the bathroom of suffocation.

u00a0"Jaswant Singh, the husband of the woman and her son Satender Singh tried to save them and in the process received burn injuries. They were rescued by the neighbours and rushed to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for medical treatment," said a police officer, adding the woman and the baby were declared brought dead by the doctors.

The police said that the fire broke out due to short circuit. According to a fire official, the incident was reported around 2 pm from 2583/5, Beadonpura in Karol Bagh. Two fire tenders worked for about half an hour to douse the flames.

"Prima facie it looks that the fire broke out due to short circuit. However, nothing concrete can be said as investigations into the matter are on," said a senior police official.
u00a0The bodies of the deceased were sent to a government hospital for post mortem examination. The mother of the child was out on some work when the incident occurred.
