Followers of two high-profile politicians go on a rampage in southeast Delhi, police compelled to open fire

It was a night of chaos and trepidation for the residents of Jamia Nagar. The supporters of Rajya Sabha MP Pervez Hashmi and RJD MLA Asif Mohammmed had a showdown in the southeast Delhi locality late on Sunday night. The cops had to fire in the air when one of the groups pelted the local police station with stones. The reason for the clash is yet to be ascertained.

Hashmi is a Congress Rajya Sabha MP, while Mohammed is the MLA from Okhla constituency where Jamia Nagar is located. Hashmi, the former MLA from this seat, is said to have considerable influence in the area. Mohammed won the bypoll after Hashmi resigned from the seat following his nomination to the Rajya Sabha.

Meanwhile, more police personnel have been deployed in the Jamia Nagar locality. Security has also been stepped-up at the New Friends Colony residence of Hashmi.
