Two people were killed on the spot and five injured near Khopoli on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Tuesday in an accident involving three vehicles on the city-bound lane. A trailer registered in Navi Mumbai rammed into the rear of a damaged trailer that was standing near the divider. A few seconds later a Maruti Suzuki Alto ran into the second trailer from behind.
The accident took place near Kilometer No. 35.According to officials from the Khopoli police station, it was not yet know in which vehicle the two people who were killed were travelling. Officers, though, said the likelihood of the deceased being from the Alto was high.
The five injured were admitted to Ashtavinayak Hospital in New Panvel, where they were stated to be out of danger after treatment. "The five are now out of danger. One of them sustained only minor injuries," Dr Akashdeep Agarwal said. All the injured people are residents of Akurdi near Pimpri. They were identified as Dashrath Mote, Siddhesh Mote, Ajay Kumar, Alka Singh and Bhimrao, all aged between 35 and 40 years.
