We didn't want to take ourselves too seriously, hence the name Kalingar Project," says Sapna Bhavnani, hair stylist and owner of Bandra salon Mad O Wot. The project took off after Bhavnani exhibited her hair art installations at the Kala Ghoda Festival earlier this year.

The exhibits are constructed with real hairpieces and represent the different moods and interpretations of Bhavnani herself. Bad hair days never looked this artistic. Taking her art a step further, Bhavnani approached fashion designer Masaba Gupta, make-up artist Meghna Butani and roped in photographer Joy Datta to set up a fashion show that is bold and bizarre.

Was the project a hair-raising experience? "I did not expect to walk into this studio with massive hair pieces, headless dolls, hair extensions and an airport runway made with hair and lights. At that point, I knew I had to be a part of this project. Also, putting make-up on a mannequin was a first for me," says Butani.

Coming on board the project didn't take much convincing, says Gupta, who coordinated outfits for the mannequins based on eccentric hairstyles. She says, "The idea was off-beat and unique. We hope to encourage young people with unconventional ideas through the project and maybe even start an apprenticeship programme with our combined knowledge of the industry."

The fashion industry isn't seen as a place where people work together. "Perhaps", says Bhavnani, "but everyone needs to get out of what they are doing everyday and take a look at the wacky side of things. This gave everyone involved that outlet and a change from serious work." The Kalingar Project has been organised in collaboration with the Art Loft in Bandra. Zenzi will host the exhibition.
