Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his appeal asking citizens to take precautions during the ongoing heatwave, alleging that ordinary people are struggling more because of rising inflation under the BJP government.
Kharge's remarks came shortly after Modi urged people across the country to stay safe amid soaring temperatures and severe heatwave conditions affecting several states.
In a post on X, Kharge said people may be able to endure the summer heat, but they are facing growing financial pressure due to inflation.
"We can endure the heat, but the common people are sweating it out due to the fire of BJP-sponsored inflation," Kharge said.
The Congress chief also questioned why the prime minister does not address issues related to rising prices and the economic burden on citizens.
"Why don't you ever say something about your own government's looting, Modi ji?" he said in the social media post.
The comments are part of the Congress party's continuing criticism of the Centre over inflation, fuel prices and the rising cost of living.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi appealed to citizens to take all possible precautions as many parts of the country continue to experience extremely high temperatures.
In a series of posts on X, Modi said the ongoing heatwave posed serious health risks, especially for children, elderly people and those working outdoors.
"Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible," the prime minister said.
He advised people to remain hydrated, carry water while stepping outdoors and help others who may be affected by the heat.
The prime minister also cautioned people against ignoring symptoms linked to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
"Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If someone around you feels unwell, weak or develops a headache, it is best to help move them to a cool and shaded place immediately," Modi said.
He further urged citizens to assist those affected by the heat by ensuring access to drinking water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS).
"In such weather, timely care and attention go a long way," he added.
Several regions across India are currently experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius in multiple states.
According to the India Meteorological Department, parts of northern and central India have recorded exceptionally high temperatures over the past few days.
Health experts and authorities have issued advisories urging people to avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated.
Kharge's remarks reflect the opposition's broader attempt to link rising temperatures with concerns over inflation and economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
The Congress party has repeatedly accused the BJP-led central government of failing to control rising prices of essential commodities and fuel, while the ruling party has defended its economic policies and welfare measures.
