A MiD DAY check reveals that more than 50 per cent of streetlights don't function; the BBMP is seemingly unaware of the situation

The civic body's negligence over installing new streetlights at busy roads of Gandhi Nagar in the heart of the city has led to an increase in crimes being reported.

Since the last one-year, no new lights have been installed.

Inspector Lokeshwar from the Upparpeth police station said, "I was transferred here last June, and streetlights haven't been working since.

If the place is well lit, it will reduce offences and commuters will be free from anti-social activities. We have requested the Karnataka electricity board (KEB) many times, but they hardly appeared this side.

This year alone, we have registered twou00a0 cases of murder, four stabbings and over 20 chain snatchings, and this area being in darkness is one of the main reasons for this."

Unkept promise

It seems like BBMP hardly keeps its promises. The staff hardly picks up their phones at night. If, by fluke someone does pick up, the answer is always a dry, "We will look at it in the morning."

In the heart of the city, Majestic was infamous for night-time crimes, but police attention had brought the area under control, and the rate of offences had decreased. But sadly, it is going back to its old status.

Eunuch menace

More than 50 per cent streetlights don't work; as a result, night commuters feel don't feelu00a0 confident to go outside.

At Service Road, commuters have to take a detour, and police are struggling to control illegal activities. The same situation continues until the KSRTC bus stand road.

Eunuchs in this area have taken to crime, because of the lure of easy money.

Public toilets have no lights, and taking advantage of this, hapless commuters fall prey to them. Some times they don't hesitate to beat up the people.

When we contacted KEB, we only got a curt response that the bulbs will be fitted soon, before they ended the call abruptly.

SB Khandre, PRO, BBMP said, " We are not aware of any such situation. We will discuss the matter with our executive engineers tomorrow. If we find it true, we will install the bulbs immediately.
