Delhi-NCR is expected to experience a prolonged spell of rain and cloudy weather over the next few days as pre-monsoon activity intensifies and the southwest monsoon advances towards the Indian mainland. According to forecasts, intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to affect the region through Friday, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Thursday and Friday, warning residents about light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 kmph and 50 kmph, with occasional gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in some areas.

The weather department has forecast partly cloudy to generally cloudy skies across the national capital over the coming days. While no official alert has been issued for Saturday, meteorologists expect similar weather conditions to persist, with the possibility of scattered showers and cloudy skies continuing through the weekend.

Rainfall Likely to Bring Relief from Summer Heat

The expected spell of rainfall is likely to keep temperatures under control and prevent the mercury from crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark for several days. Weather officials predict that maximum temperatures in Delhi-NCR will remain between 36 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius during the first week of June.

These readings are expected to stay below the seasonal average, providing residents with a relatively cooler start to the month. Typically, Delhi records average maximum temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius during the first half of June, making the current weather pattern a notable departure from normal conditions.

Recent Weather Data Reflects Cooling Trend

Recent observations from Safdarjung, Delhi's primary weather monitoring station, indicate a gradual cooling trend. The station recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius, slightly below the normal level for this time of year. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.4 degrees Celsius, marginally above the seasonal average.

The combination of cloud cover, moisture-laden winds and recurring rainfall is expected to contribute to more comfortable weather conditions across the region in the coming days.

Southwest Monsoon Set to Enter Kerala

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on Thursday, marking the beginning of India's annual four-month rainy season. The onset of the monsoon is a significant event for the country, as it plays a crucial role in agriculture, water resource management and overall economic activity.

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and several other parts of southern India. Heavy showers, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected as weather systems over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions create favourable conditions for rainfall.

Monsoon Progress Being Closely Watched

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the monsoon's advance, as its progress has a direct impact on agricultural operations, reservoir levels and weather patterns across the country. While southern states are likely to receive the first substantial rains of the season, northern regions, including Delhi-NCR, are expected to benefit from increased atmospheric moisture and enhanced pre-monsoon activity.

With rainfall expected to continue over the coming days, residents of Delhi-NCR can look forward to a temporary break from intense summer conditions as the country transitions into the monsoon season.
