Delhi Police has directed several social media platforms to remove posts and videos containing offensive and abusive remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi that were uploaded during the student protests at Jantar Mantar and the violence linked to the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march.
According to police officials, objectionable content targeting the Prime Minister appeared across multiple social media platforms during the protests and the subsequent clashes in the national capital.
Delhi Police said its social media monitoring team has been continuously scanning online platforms to identify posts that allegedly violate applicable rules.
Officials said notices are being issued to the respective social media intermediaries directing them to remove such content.
According to the police, several posts and videos containing abusive language directed at the Prime Minister have already been taken down following these notices.
The cyber and social media teams are continuing to monitor online activity related to the protests to identify additional content that may require action.
The development comes amid continuing political tensions over the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march, during which students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET and CBSE examinations clashed with security personnel while marching from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament.
According to Delhi Police, 130 police personnel and around 65 students were injured during the violence.
Police said 15 FIRs have been registered in connection with the clashes.
Officials also said nearly 3,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around Jantar Mantar, where an average of 10,000 people have reportedly gathered daily since the protests intensified.
Delhi Police said Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras are being used to identify anti-social elements entering the protest site.
According to the police, more than 2,000 individuals with criminal records have been identified through the system.
Meanwhile, the Opposition, including the Congress, has moved adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha and suspension of business notices in the Rajya Sabha seeking an immediate discussion on what it described as the "brutal and disproportionate" use of force against students during the July 20 protest.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has also questioned the police action and sought accountability over the alleged use of pellet guns and other measures during the crackdown.
Delhi Police has maintained that anti-social elements resorted to violence during the protest, prompting police intervention.
