Grief and panic gripped Alandi in Pune district of Maharashtra after eight students from a private coaching class died after drowning at Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday. Following news of the tragedy, parents rushed to the Winners Academy in Alandi as they sought information about their children.
The students, who were studying in Classes 11 and 12 Science, were on an educational trip organised by the coaching institute when the incident occurred.
Eight students from Alandi in Pune district died after drowning while swimming at Diveagar beach in Shrivardhan taluka of Raigad district in Maharashtra on Thursday.
The students were on an educational trip organised by Winners Academy, a private coaching class for Class 11 and 12 Science students.
According to preliminary information, the students entered the sea to swim but were swept into deeper waters after apparently misjudging the sea conditions.
The incident prompted a major search and rescue operation at the popular tourist destination.
Employees of Mahakali Water Sports, along with local residents, immediately began searching for the students after receiving information about the incident. The bodies of all eight victims were subsequently recovered from the sea.
The deceased have been identified as Rajveer Vahile, Soham Bhandwalkar, Kaustubh Dond, Yash Wankhede, Kaivalya Vasankar, Tanmay Vahile, Sumit Ahire and Pranav Bansode, according to a communication issued by the coaching institute to parents.
The recovered bodies were taken to Borli Panchatan Primary Health Centre for medical examination and post-mortem procedures.
Police and local administration officials reached the spot and began further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a message to parents, Winners Academy said the remaining students were safe at their hotel under the supervision of teachers and institute staff.
Parents of the deceased students were asked to reach Shrivardhan Rural Hospital for further procedures.
