Docs remove 27 fibroids from woman's uterus

Doctors at Sion hospital found and removed 27 fibroids while operating on the uterus of a 30-year-old woman last Wednesday.

Ratnaprabha Maghade (30), was admitted to the Sion hospital last month after she complained of acute abdominal pain. A sonography revealed that Maghade had many uterine fibroids, which could only be removed through surgery.

From a young age of 14, Maghade, a resident of Badlapur, has endured severe pain owing to the fibroids. She has been operated upon twice - once in 2004 and then in 2012 - but the problem persisted.

Two months ago, Maghade started experiencing severe weakness.

A blood test revealed that her haemoglobin level was abnormally low. This was because of heavy bleeding during her monthly menstruation.u00a0

"I was experiencing irregular periods and heavy bleeding for two months and so we approached the local doctor who advised me to go to Sion hospital. I was operate upon there and am feeling much better than before," said Maghade.

According to doctors, there are three types of uterine fibroids - subserous, intramural and submucosal.

Of these, submucosal fibroids are very painful and result in heavy bleeding during menstruation. All three types of fibroids were found in Maghade's uterus.

"We removed a total of 27 fibroids from her uterus, each measuring between six and two cm. In the procedure called myomectomy, the fibroids
were removed without removal of the uterus as the patient is young and may want to bear a child in future, after she gets married," said Dr Kalyani Kale of Sion Hospital.

Maghade's battle with uterine fibroids is far from over. There are chances that they will reappear and the only solution is to either remove the uterus completely, or to conceive, after which chances of developing fibroids may reduce," said Dr Yogesh Nadanwar, head of the Gynaecology Department at Sion Hospital.u00a0
