The All India Students' Association (AISA) held a citizens' protest and public meeting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Friday, demanding the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over what the organisation described as irregularities in the electoral process, reported the PTI.
The protest was organised by the AISA Delhi unit amid a wider political and public debate over the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
AISA, which is backed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, raised the slogan "Arrest Gyanesh Kumar" during the demonstration, according to the PTI.
The organisers said the protest followed a recent report by The Indian Express, which they claimed raised serious concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The allegations made by the protesters concern the conduct of the poll panel and the electoral process. They remain claims made by the organisers and have not been established as facts.
Several activists and public figures participated in the protest and public meeting, including AISA president Neha, Yogendra Yadav, RJD MP Manoj Jha, CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, Anjali Bhardwaj and Nandita Narain, as per the PTI.
The demonstration was held amid heavy police deployment at Jantar Mantar.
The protest comes amid demonstrations by opposition parties and other groups over the Election Commission's handling of electoral rolls and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise.
The Election Commission has been facing criticism from opposition parties over the issue, while the poll panel's functioning and the SIR process remain the subject of political debate. Congress has separately announced protests at state election offices on September 25, demanding the arrest and removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and warned that his organisation would launch a nationwide protest if the CEC does not step down within 48 hours.
"Jantar Mantar 2.0 will definitely happen if CEC Gyanesh Kumar doesn't resign," Dipke said, referring to the protests previously organised by the CJP at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, reported the PTI.
CJP's Dipke, Saurav Das along with their team on Thursday addressed a press conference on in Delhi amid the Election Commission row.
