A former police car driver, who was arrested in the city last month for a series of car thefts, has been handed over to the Mumbai police for further investigations.

Ilakal Nazeer (46) of Gurappanapalya was accused of stealing at least four cars from Bangalore and Mumbai with the help of his old friend and accomplice, Amzad Khan.

The duo stole luxury cars worth over Rs 35 lakh and sold them after faking the registrations. Khan is understood to be still absconding.

Nazeer who started out as a driver in Bangalore moved to Bahrain a few years later when his uncle got him a job as a driver with the police department.

It was going well for Nazeer for the first few years until his alcohol problem kicked in. He had frequent squabbles with his wife, Ayesha and their financial condition began to deteriorate.

On the back of his ailing economic condition, he began conning the department he was working for. He was eventually caught and expelled from the department and deported to India.

While he was looking for a new job in Bangalore, Nazeer met Amzad Khan, who decided to put his knowledge of cars and good driving skills to use. They started out by stealing a couple of cars from Ashoknagar and Basavangudi.

After their initial success, they decided to go big, stealing an expensive car from the showroom under the pretext of test-driving the vehicle.

About 25 km from Chennai, the police spotted the duo changing the number plates on the car but they managed to escape. The car was sold two months later using fake registration documents.

But their luck finally ran out when they were arrested for trying to sell another vehicle outside Wipro Park in Koramnagla.

They had stolen it with the aid of another accomplice in Mumbai. After the city police extracted the necessary information from him, he was handed over to the Mumbai police for further investigation.

Koramangala PI G Nagaraj said, "Earlier we didn't know that he had worked in Bahrain but he revealed it during investigation.
