May be Police Inspector Deepak Sawant from the Yerawada police station is seeing a lot of action movies these days. A cine artiste has been running from pillar to post for security after Sawant allegedly issued threats to him to get him to remove an 'encroachment' on a plot of land in Yerawada reserved for the police department.

Salim Karim Mulani, who has acted in films like Mudrank, in which he played the role of a bodyguard of stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi, has now approached the Home Minister for help.

The plot
The disputed plot measures 48 gunthas and is at Survey Number 48b. It belongs to the Revenue Department. The Mulani family occupies six gunthas of the plot, having lived there for three decades. The Mulani family claims that the state government issued a government resolution (GR) in 1999 saying that the occupants of the plot ufffd other than slums ufffd should be fined 2.5 times the price and then the plot should be regularised.

Twenty-six gunthas of the plot in dispute belong to the Yerawada police, while the rest is for the talathi office and the nullah passing by.

The drama
The Pune Municipal Corporation recently laid a pipeline in the area and axed trees there. As a result of this, Mulani's house was exposed to the road, where commuters used to urinate openly. Fed up of this, Mulani set up a fence of steel sheets. The Yerawada police objected to this, terming it an encroachment, and held Mulani responsible for it.

Mulani maintains that the government has in principle agreed to give the six gunthas of the plot to his family and he is going to soon pay the fine to regularise it. "As it is going to be regularised, it does not amount to encroachment, as alleged by Sawant," he said.

He added that Sawant assaulted him on Saturday.

"Inspector Sawant pulled my hair and dragged me into the police vehicle," Mulani said. "I was taken to the Yerawada police station around 1 pm and was kept there till 8 pm. Inspector Sawant and his other officers also threatened me, telling me I should remove the alleged encroachment on the reserved land plot."

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Sanjay Jadhav made the assurance that the matter would be looked into.

"If what is alleged has happened, it is wrong. I will take care of it," DCP Jadhav said.
