A fire broke out at the 220 kV Extra-High-Voltage Substation of the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) in Chinchwad at around 12:25 pm on Sunday following a technical fault, significantly affecting power supply across several parts of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The fire has been brought under control. Officials from MSETCL and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) are working to restore power supply to areas that can be serviced, while keeping the affected section of the substation shut down.
The Chinchwad facility is a 220 kV Extra-High-Voltage Substation operated by MSETCL. According to officials, an explosion occurred at around 12:25 pm in a 22 kV current transformer (CT) and breaker, following which a fire broke out at the substation.
The flames rose significantly, prompting an immediate response from the authorities. The fire has since been brought under control, while efforts are underway to assess the damage and restore electricity supply.
The incident disrupted several 22 kV high-voltage feeders supplying electricity to MSEDCL. As a result, power supply has been interrupted across large parts of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The affected areas include Pradhikaran, Ravet, Kalewadi, Wakad, Pimple Gurav, Pimple Nilakh, Sangvi, Punawale and Tathawade, among other parts of the industrial town.
MSETCL officials are working on a priority basis to restore electricity supply from the unaffected sections of the substation while keeping the faulty section isolated.
Meanwhile, MSEDCL officials are making efforts to restore power to affected areas through alternative supply routes at the earliest possible time.
The incident caused panic in Chinchwad after residents and commuters heard a loud explosion. Locals were also alarmed after seeing flames and thick smoke rising from the substation in the densely populated area.
