Days before his arrest, film financier and diamond merchant Bharat Shah had met a close relative of the prime minister to plead his case. Taped evidence landed Shah in jail for withholding information on the film industry's links with the underworld. He served a 14-month jail sentence in 2001.


What he said: A department official confirmed that the state home department was sent feelers to go slow in the Bharat Shah case.

Status now: His son's wedding was attending by Bollywood's who's who in February 2009.
