While the Delhi police had claimed that they might not get enough time to run security drills properly at the Commonwealth Games venues, their Gurgaon counterparts have got on with their job of securing the only shooting range at Kadarpur which would be used for the mega sporting event.

The Gurgaon police had roped in the best of their men and machines to ensure an incident-free full bore shooting competition at the Kadarpur shooting range.

Gurgaon police commissioner Surjeet Singh Deswal said that they have asked the Centre to provide air surveillance for the event.

On Thursday, Deswal took stock of the security preparedness at the Kadarpur shooting range, along with senior officials, and held a meeting with the Organising Committee officials. "We have asked the Organising Committee to provide a list of the duty staff to be deployed in and around the shooting range so that the Haryana Police officials can coordinate with them. The verification of that staff would be done by the Gurgaon police only," he said.

The officers of telecom wing have been directed to install a secured line for the CRPF Kadarpur range premises which will be linked with the Commonwealth Games Village in Delhi, Gurgaon Police control room and the Deputy Commissioners' office.

As many as 74 CCTV cameras have been installed at the range for security.

Apart from the Gurgaon police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would also be manning the venue. A senior Gurgaon police officer told MiD DAY that apart from the regular officers, commandos would be deployed at the shooting range who would be provided with special binoculars and walky talky sets.

"We would also press into service our cavalry forces," he said.

Resident evil

The police are verifying the antecedents of the residents living in a radius of 5 km of the Kadarpur Shooting Range.

"Each and every landlord has been asked to get his tenants verified. Strict action will be taken against them if they failed to do so," said a senior Gurgaon police official.
Sources said that as many as ten landlords have been arrested in the last one month for not keeping unverified tenants.

The Gurgaon Police also conducted a trial run for reserving a dedicated lane for Common Wealth Games (CWG) on the route from Delhi-Gurgaon Toll Plaza to Kadarpur shooting range on Thursday. Police Commissioner Surjeet Singh Deswal, along with other senior police officers, participated in the trial run which started from Toll plaza.

The players would be boarding a bus to be escorted by two police vehicles for their security.

Mr Deswal said in Thursday's trial run traffic jams were experienced at some places on the route from Delhi border Toll Plaza to Kadarpur shooting range via Signature tower.
