Haryana Congress leaders on Wednesday held a demonstration in front of the District Mini Secretariat here to protest the detention of Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on July 21.
They raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged paper leaks.
Haryana Congress president Rao Narender Singh, Congress AICC State In-charge Sanjay Dutt, and a number of MLAs, took part in the protest.
Addressing party workers during the protest Rao Narender Singh accused the BJP government of suppressing democratic protests and alleged that party MLAs and office-bearers were detained on Tuesday evening while on their way to submit a memorandum to the Governor over the NEET paper leak issue and the treatment of protesting students.
He said a Congress delegation was peacefully proceeding from the Congress office to meet the Governor when police stopped and detained them. He claimed the leaders were kept at Sector-17 police station until around midnight.
He said demanded the resignation of Union Minister Pradhan, a detailed discussion on the alleged NEET paper leak in Parliament, and withdrawal of criminal cases registered against students and youth protesting over the issue.
Referring to the recent protests at Jantar Mantar, the Congress leader alleged that students demonstrating peacefully against the examination irregularities were subjected to "excessive police action".
He also criticised the alleged handling of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during protests in support of students.
He said the alleged NEET paper leak had shattered the dreams of millions of students and their families and questioned the Centre over repeated examination leaks.
He demanded accountability from the Education Ministry and alleged that the government had failed to safeguard the interests of students.
The Congress leader announced that the party would submit memorandum to the President of India through Deputy Commissioners in every district of Haryana.
The leader also alleged that farmers had been prevented from holding protests and that false cases had been registered against several protesters.
They asserted that the Congress would continue to support students, youth and farmers facing what it termed government repression.
