The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of eastern and central India as a well-marked low-pressure area continues to persist over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining regions of north coastal Odisha and the northwest Bay of Bengal.
The weather system is expected to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall across several states over the coming days, with isolated areas likely to experience heavy, very heavy and, in some places, extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD has also issued warnings over strong winds and rough sea conditions in the North Bay of Bengal and advised fishermen against venturing into the affected waters.
According to the IMD, Gangetic West Bengal is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy rainfall at isolated locations on August 31 and September 1.
Odisha is expected to experience more intense rainfall activity under the influence of the weather system.
The state is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few locations and isolated extremely heavy rainfall on August 31.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places on September 1, while isolated heavy rainfall is forecast during September 2 and 3.
The IMD's forecast indicates that the low-pressure system could continue to affect weather conditions across eastern India for several days.
Jharkhand is also likely to experience widespread rainfall.
The IMD forecast light to moderate rainfall at most places, with isolated heavy rainfall on August 31. Similar conditions, including isolated heavy rainfall, are expected on September 1 and 2.
Bihar is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy rainfall at isolated locations on August 31, September 1 and September 2.
Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas may need to remain alert as persistent rainfall could lead to waterlogging and localised flooding, particularly in areas that receive heavy showers over short periods.
Chhattisgarh is expected to witness some of the most intense rainfall during the forecast period.
The IMD said light to moderate rainfall is likely at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few locations and isolated extremely heavy rainfall on August 31.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places on September 1. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of the state between September 2 and September 4.
East Madhya Pradesh is also likely to receive widespread rainfall. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places from August 31 to September 3.
The intensity is expected to reduce after that period, although isolated heavy rainfall may continue between September 4 and September 6.
The IMD has also forecast significant rainfall activity over East Uttar Pradesh.
The region is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations on August 31.
Isolated heavy rainfall is expected to continue from September 1 to September 6.
The prolonged forecast period indicates that parts of the region could remain under the influence of moisture associated with the low-pressure system even as it evolves over the coming days.
Along with the rainfall warnings, the IMD issued an advisory regarding strong winds over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas.
Squally winds with speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely to prevail over the North Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts during the next 24 hours.
The weather department said sea conditions over the North Bay of Bengal are likely to remain rough to very rough during the same period.

The IMD has urged people in areas expected to receive heavy rainfall to remain updated on local weather warnings as the low-pressure system continues to influence conditions across eastern and central India.
