Interpol Red Corner Notice issued against 2024 Sambhal violence `mastermind` Shariq Sata.(PICS/X)
Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against fugitive gangster Shariq Satta, who has been named by Uttar Pradesh police as the key conspirator behind the November 2024 violence in Sambhal.
Satta, who has been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court, allegedly fled India for Dubai using a fake passport.
The issuance of the Red Corner Notice follows a formal request by the UP Police, facilitated through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in coordination with Interpol.
The Red Corner Notice enables law enforcement agencies in foreign jurisdictions, particularly the UAE, to locate and detain Satta to facilitate his extradition back to India.
Satta faces roughly 55 to 60 criminal cases involving organised crime and vehicle theft rings operating across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR). A Look Out Circular (LOC) had previously been issued against him.
Local authorities have initiated formal legal proceedings to attach Satta's properties in India.
The November 2024 clashes erupted during a court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, following claims that a historic Harihar temple once stood at the site.
The unrest resulted in several casualties and injuries. Law enforcement agencies anticipate that the Interpol notice will significantly accelerate efforts to trace, arrest, and extradite Satta to face trial in India.
